Building open AI infrastructure for European science

AI4EOSC is an European initiative bringing together a platform, a growing ecosystem of projects, and a network of scientific communities to make research-grade AI accessible across Europe.

Our story

Where we come from

From a single Horizon Europe grant to a living infrastructure, AI4EOSC has grown into an open platform community spanning European science.

2017 EU Project

DEEP-Hybrid-DataCloud project kicks off

This Horizon 2020 project delivers the DEEP platform, allowing researchers to build deep learning models over pan-EU e-Infrastructures.

2022 EU Project

AI4EOSC project kicks off

The Horizon Europe project begins with the goal of providing a platform for developing, deploying and sharing AI models within the European Open Science Cloud.

2023 First gateways and users onboarding

Early adopters go live

Projects like iMagine deploy domain-specific instances of the platform, the AI4EOSC users start exploting the platform and providing feedback for the next development cycle.

2025 Development

Project completes, initiative continues

The original AI4EOSC project concludes on schedule. The platform, the community and the infrastructure continue independently under the AI4EOSC Initiative.

2026 Expanding

New projects extend the ecosystem

Ongoing

EOSC-ARENA, FLUID-AI and other EU-funded projects join the initiative, adding AI agents, interoperability layers and new scientific communities.

Funded by Horizon Europe

The original AI4EOSC project was funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. Associated projects within the initiative are independently funded through their own EU grants.

Mission

What we stand for

AI4EOSC is built on the belief that research-grade AI should be open, interoperable and accessible to any scientific community in Europe.

FAIR and open by default

All software is open source. Models are openly published, following the FAIR principles. Infrastructure is built on open standards. No lock-in, no black boxes.

Interoperable with EOSC

Native integration with EOSC authentication, storage and compute means researchers can start without rebuilding their stack.

Built for European science

Designed around the needs of European research institutions, following EU values on data sovereignty, ethics and sustainability.

Community-driven

Shaped by the scientific communities that use it — from marine biologists to climate scientists — and the developers who build on it.
